Just login and the game will handle the downloading of required files for you. Your first log in will result in a longer download (about 30 - 40 minutes), placing all required files in their proper places on the clients computer. Any following updates to the server will result is small updates to the files on the client's computer. When logging in the auto-downlaoder will check for files that need to be sync-ed and will update when and where nesseccary.
Once the Downloader is past step 3 in its process it allows you to begin creating your character.

NWN2 Expansion - Mask of the Betrayer (MotB)
If you don't have XP1 The Mask of the Betrayer expansion pack you will still be able to log in and start playing, but you will need to install the expansion in order to have full functionality within the world.
NWN2 Expansion - Storm of Zehir (SoZ)
XP2 Storm of Zehir content is now being used throughout the PW. I beleive the starting city and the starting quests within will function ok without the expansion installed. Once you leave the city you are likely to run into Worges which are a SoZ creature model, if you are attacked by these(without the expansion installed) it boots you from the server. So if you plan on an extensive stay on the server, please plan on buying SoZ. You should be able to get started without it though.
The expansions adds creatures, weapons, and placeable models, as well as spells, feats, textures, classes, races, and more to the game. Their single player modules are also well worth their cost.
